The New South Wales village of Bedgerebong lies about 20 miles west of Forbes and has been established as a village since the 1800s. Its name is derived from the aboriginal words ‘Badjarri Bong’ which means ‘an area of good water’. The village has its own successful racecourse which first held races at the turn of the century, with racing administered by the Bedgerebong Picnic Race Club. It moved to its current course in the 1920 when the principal race, the Bedgerebong Cup over 1 mile, was staged on Boxing Day with the result given below. Early winners of the Bedgerebong Cup are shown below, and a full list is available on request. Today the Club holds race meetings on the middle Saturday in February, the highlight of the meeting being the Bedgerebong Cup (Lately the Begerebong Picnic Cup) over 1400 metres.
