The racecourse of Berkshire Downs was located in Hancock in the state of Massachusetts. The 4 furlong oval dirt track, with separate 5 furlong and 6 ½ furlong chutes, sharing a 127 metre home straight, first opened its gates for thoroughbred racing on 19th September 1960 offering a programme of thoroughbred racing. In those early days it ran 24 days of racing, acting as the final leg of the Massachusetts Fair circuit. The track lacked a catchment area to be commercially attractive, competing with nearby Green Mountain Park. The track struggled on for 16 years, often threatened by would be purchasers, until finally closing its gates on 3rd October 1976.
