The racecourse of Bowie was situated in the town of Bowie, some 32 kilometres from Baltimore, in the state of Maryland. Its inaugural meeting was held on 1st October 1914 and the course was the mainstay of racing in the area throughout the 1950's and 60's. The 8 furlong oval dirt track had separate 7 furlong and 10 furlong chutes, sharing a 350 metre home straight. It boasted spacious facilities which were initially open air, but were later enclosed grandstand and Clubhouse, with total capacity to seat 11,000 people. Furthermore, there was sufficient stabling for almost 12000 horses. The highlight of the racing year was the John B Campbell Stakes. However, newer courses with better facilities opened in the area and the track held its final meeting on 14th July 1985, with Perfect Park winning the very last race at the track. Although the grandstand was demolished on 11th February 2004, the course does still exist and is used as a training centre. |
