The racecourse of Cahokia Downs was near the town of Alorton in the state of Illinois, just 5 miles from the city of St Louis, and first opened its gates to racing on 27th July 1954. The racing was administered by the Easy St Louis Jockey Club which specialised in night racing under floodlights, welcoming huge crowds packing the impressive grandstand to watch thoroughbred and Standardbred races through the large glass windows. The 6 furlong oval dirt track had separate chutes of 5 furlongs and 8 ½ furlongs, with a 200 metre home straight. In 1976 tragedy struck on 25th February when a massive stable barn fire engulfed many outbuildings in which 72 valuable horses perished. The highlight of the racing season was the St Louis Derby, although many will remember it more for the feat of jockey David Gill who, on 18th October 1978, rode 8 winners on a single card. The track closed its gates for the final time on 7th July 1979. |
