The Calder racecourse, spread over 220 acres, is situated in Miami in the state of Florida and has two racing seasons and two tracks, one of turf and the other dirt. It was the brainchild of Stephen Calder who wanted to open a racecourse in Florida which was operational during the summer months. After purchasing the site he took a while to develop the course and get the necessary permit to allow his new track to operate, but it eventually opened on its present site on 6th May 1971. The 8 furlong oval dirt track has a home straight of 302 metres, while there is also an inner 7 furlong turf track and separate 7 furlong and 10 furlong chutes. The summer racing season lasts from April to October, whilst the winter season extends from October to January. The principal races at the track are Florida Million, the Summit of Speed, the Princess Rooney Handicap and the Grand Slam. It enjoys outstanding facilities, with a Clubhouse and Grandstand which can seat 6,000 people. In 2014 Calder Racecourse was renamed Gulfstream Park West. |
