CARDIFF ARMS PARK GREYHOUND STADIUM

This site is not an official website for the track shown here and is neither approved or endorsed by the stadium. I am indebted to Richard English for helping to construct this page.

Cardiff has seen greyhound racing at a number of venues, notably at the Arms Park and Cardiff White City. The White City was the first to hold meetings, with its inaugural meeting on 7th April 1928 making it one of the earliest. Shortly afterwards, on 26th May 1928 the Arms Park track was opened around the perimeter of the famous Rugby pitch. The track had a circumference of 440 yards, with standard races run over both 500 yards and 525 yards, hurdle races over 525 yards, distance races over 700 yards and 725 yards. There was a Members Club in 1932 called the Arms Park Club, where annual membership cost 10s 6d.

The principal races in 1931 were the Glamorgan Gold Cup over 525 yards which was run on 10th July 1931 and won by Phoenix in 30.29 secs. The Welsh Champion Sprint was run over 300 yards on 18th September 1931 and won by Barrack Bridge in 16.95 secs. The Welsh Championship was run over 525 yards on 23rd October 1931 and won by Phoenix in 30.26 secs.

Mick the Miller won the Welsh Derby in August 1930, although it was run at the White City, Cardiff and he won in a time of 29.55 which was a World Record at the time. My thanks to Tony Nash for providing the detail.

On 8th July 1972 the dual English Derby winner Patricias Hope won over 480 metres in a time of 29.75 secs.
