The New South Wales country town of Condoblin lies on the Lachlan River in the Central West region of the state. Its name is derived from the Wiradjuri Aboriginal word ‘cundabullen’ which means ‘shallow crossing’; the people inhabited the area prior to the arrival of white settlers as early as 1817 when Breal Bennett explored the area. Today its population has grown beyond 3,500 and the town runs its own very successful racecourse, with racing administered by the Condobolin Picnic Race Club, the highlight of the annual meeting traditionally held on a Saturday in late February, being the Condobolin Picnic Cup over 1400 metres. The Picnic Race Club was established in 1920 after a public meeting, convened by the Mayor H C Moulder, was held in the Council Chambers on Friday 12th November. Their first meeting was staged in 1921 and, for a time, meetings organised by the Picnic Club and Jockey Club were held in the town. On Wednesday 16th May 1923 the Picnic Race Club administered a race meeting featuring the Picnic Race Club Cup, which was immediately followed by a Jockey Club meeting when the principal race was the Codobolin Handicap. The results from both of these meetings are shown below.
