DERBY GREYHOUND STADIUM This site is not an official website for the track shown here and is neither approved or endorsed by the stadium. I am indebted to Richard English for helping to construct this page. |
The greyhound track in the city of Derby on Vernon Street was situated at 1° 29' W 52° 55' N and held its inaugural meeting in 1933. The greyhound stadium that was situated on the outskirts was famous for being built around an old, walled prison. It was administered by the Preston Greyhound Racing Association. The inaugural meeting took place on 29th April 1933 but unusually consisted of only 4 dog races. The first race was a sprint over just 260 yards and was won by the second favourite Tramore Lad who easily held on to beat the favourite Santober Lad by a length. Derby had a track circumference of 385 yards with standard races over 460 yards and distance races over 650 yards. |
The major races were the Derby Plate over 420 metres and the Derby Vase over the extened 590 metres. The great Scurlogue Champ ran at the track on 16th November 1985 and held the record for 764 metres of 49.04 secs. The track raced under NGRC rules but closed for business on 7th December 1988. |
Track Records, as of December 1936, are shown below together with an indication of how fast the time is in comparison to other tracks, both for currently open and defunct tracks, in the UK. Ratings are between 0 and 100, where 100 is an extremely fast time and reflects the speed of the track, tightness of the circuit and quality of greyhound visiting the tracks. I am grateful to Tony Nash for providing the data. |
