This was run on Wednesday 5th June 1901 and the winner was bred by Lady Meux and trained by John Huggins at Newmarket. There were 25 runners from an initial enrty of 279. The winner won by 3/4 length, with 4 lengths between second and third. The winning time was 2 mins 40.2 secs. It had a number of features which were unusual; the largest field of 25 since the 1867 Derby, the winner was owned (Mr W C Whitney), trained (John Huggins) and ridden (Lester Reiff) by Americans. |
THE DERBY 1901 VOLODYOVSKI SR 2027 The winner won a first prize of £5,670, (The equivalent of £662,600 in today's terms based on Bank of England inflation calculator). Given the large field, it was just as well that it was the very first occasion that the Derby was started by Starting Machine, lining up in draw number. For the record, the winner Volodyovski was drawn 12. |
