The New South Wales city of Dubbo is located where the Newell, Mitchell and Golden highways meet in the Orana Region of the state. It is nearly 250 miles north-west of state capital Sydney, and enjoys direct road links with both Melbourne and Brisbane. The earliest inhabitants of the region were the Wiradjuri nation, but the first European explorers to arrive in the area were led by Yorkshireman John Oxley in 1818. Today the population has grown beyond 36,000 people and it runs its own highly successful racecourse. Racing at the course is administered by the City of Dubbo Turf Club, staging at least 13 meetings annually, the highlight of the racing year being the Gold Cup contested on the third Sunday each September.

Although unreported races are likely to have taken place prior to 1857, the earliest occasion when full race results were reported was from the two day meeting held on Wednesday 2nd and Thursday 3rd April 1857. The course had been under 3 feet of water, due to the flooding of the Macquarie River only a short while beforehand, but it had recovered well and was in fine fettle. The result of the feature race each day is shown below:-
Wednesday 2nd April 1857
Dubbo Town Plate (40 sovereigns) over 1 ½ miles

1. Dandy owned by Mr Martin
2. Planet owned by Mr Kemmis
3. Brunette owned by Mr Campbell
Thursday 3rd April 1857
Publican’s Purse (40 sovereigns) over 2 miles

1. Dandy owned by Mr Martin
2. Doctor owned by Mr Reine
3. Commissioner owned by Mr Boland
These were the first Dubbo races to be completed without interference, accident or serious injury, and afterwards a sumptuous dinner was provided by Mr J McDonald who spared no expense.

Just 3 years later when the races were organised by the Dubbo Turf Club, and with the meeting extended to a third day, the Stewards had to move all of the cards forward a day because of torrential rain on the Wednesday. In the event the meeting stretched from Thursday 19th to Saturday 21st April 1860, with key race results shown below:-
Thursday 19th April 1860

2. Misfortune owned by Mr D Gillip and ridden by Cubby

The Dubbo Cup race was instigated by Mr C W Rogan in 1925 when won by Bellambi, while the next year the Cup was donated by Mr Donald Cameron and Mr B Veech when Yield was successful. In 1927 the Cup was marred by tragedy when the Kensington jockey D Vitnell sustained critical injuries when his mount Braehead fell, the jockey dying the next day from his injuries.
