ELLESMERE PORT GREYHOUND STADIUM This site is not an official website for the track shown here and is neither approved or endorsed by the stadium. I am indebted to Richard English for the scans of badges on this page. |
The final Speedway meeting at The Stadium, Ellesmere Port took place on Boxing Day 1985 when a 39 all draw suited both parties in the Past and Prest team match. Greyhound racing and speedway seem to go hand in hand, but on this occasion the speedway circuit was replaced by a greyhound track. The greyhound track on the Wirral at Ellesmere Port is situated on Thornton Road at 2° 52' W 53° 16' N. It operates as an independent track and it was on the 29th February 1988 that the inaugural greyhound race meeting took place with the very first race being won by the 3/1 Go Ben Go. |
The track has a circumference of 380 metres and runs sprints over 265 metres and standard races over 470 metres. The principal races at the track in the past have been the Cheshire Oaks and the Whitbread Open. |
I am grateful to Jon Seddon for the following link to a map showing the whereabouts of the old track |
This section gives a comprehensive picture of
the badges produced by the track throughout the ages, but only provides the briefest of
glimpses of its history. For those wishing to undertake further research we can recommend
