The New South Wales town of Grenfell is located some 370 kilometres west of the state capital Sydney in the Central West region of the state. The town grew up around a discovery of gold by a shepherd, Cornelius O’Brien, in 1866 and within a year the town was established. It was named after the Gold Commissioner John Granville Grenfell who was shot on 7th December 1866 when driving a coach. Today the town has a population in excess of 2000 inhabitants and has its own very successful racecourse, where racing is administered by the Grenfell Jockey Club, although some meetings are arranged by the Grenfell Picnic Race Club. The highlights of the racing year are the Grenfell Cup over 2000 metres and the Loaded Dog Handicap over 1400 metres, traditionally run on the fourth Saturday in September.
