A racecourse has existed at Durban, KwaZulu-Natal since 1844 when it was run by the Natal Turf Club. In 1884 it became Greyville Racecourse and currently holds both day and floodlit night meetings. Cape 1985.JPG (10273 bytes)
Its principal races are the Group One Greyville Gold Cup over 3200 metres which is run in August, and the Durban July Handicap (Vodacom July) Cape Turf 1999.JPG (7987 bytes)
The Canon Gold Cup, run over 3200 metres in August was won in 2008 by the Basil Marcus trained Desert Links ridden by Greg Cheyne.
Natal kt.JPG (7152 bytes) The Durban July Handicap has been run at the track in July since 1897. It was won in its inaugural running by Campanajo who recorded back to back wins the next year. Milesia Pride repeated the feat in 1949 and 1950, as did El Picha for trainer Geoff Woodruff in 1999 and 2000. The most recent renewal was a dead-heat between Pocket Power and Dancers Daughter.
