Before Haydock Park came into being there were racemeetings held at nearby Newton Common.

Evidence of such a meeting held at Newton Common is shown in a racecard from Gerald Tinsleys extensive collection. Indeed the racecard mentions the opening of the new Haydock Racecourse and its inaugural meeting.
