The South Australia town of Jamestown lies to the north of the state some 130 miles north of the state capital Adelaide. The town was named after Sir James Fergusson, a Scot who was Governor of the State and surveyed the town in 1871. Indeed, all of its streets are named after towns in Scotland, including Cumnock, Kilmarnock, Irvine, Clyde and Muirkirk. The town boasts a population in excess of 1500 and has its own very well run racecourse where racing is administered by the Jamestown Racing Club. Each October the racecourse hosts a meeting as part of the town’s weekend long festival, with the principal race, the Jamestown Cup, being staged on the Saturday. It is usually held on the same day as principal races are held at Randwick and Flemington.
