The New South Wales town of Jerilderie lies on the Newell Highway in the southern Riverina region of the state, some 420 miles south-west of state capital Sydney, although only 28 miles from the Victoria state border. The area was originally inhabited by the Jeithi Aborigines until European settlers arrived and began to develop the town in 1854. Today the town has a population of just over 1,000 inhabitants and enjoys its own racecourse, where the highlight of the racing year, traditionally on the third Saturday in September, is the Jerilderie Gold Cup over 1400 metres. However, early newspaper reports show that the original racecourse was on the north side of the town and had its own grandstand and other outbuildings. Jerilderie Jockey Club was purported to have started in the 1860s, offering a total prize fund, in the early days, of £100. Traditionally there was a 2 day mid-winter meeting and a single day Christmas meeting. Full reported results began to be published in the early 1870s after a committee meeting was held in November 1872 to promote a race meeting on Boxing Day 1872. All business people, with one exception, agreed to subscribe, the one exception being a local publican, who was a racing fan, yet declined to donate. There was considerable concern expressed at the meeting about the state of the old private bridge, because without access to it the townsfolk would face a 2 mile trip to the racecourse. |

It is interesting to note how the principal race changed each decade over a 40 year period. |
