KUMARA RACECOURSE
It is known that racing took place at the course as early as 1887. A two-day meeting was held on 28th and 29th December of that year. Subsequent meetings were held twice a year at Christmas and again at Easter.
The racecourse is situated at Kumara in the West Coast region of South Island.

By the late 1940's the Kumara Racing Club moved their annual meet to take place in January.
The principal race is the Kumara Golden Nuggets which is unique because the winner receives 2 ozs of gold.
