The town of Leeton lies in the Riverina region of New South Wales some 550 kilometres west of the state capital Sydney, but just 450 kilometres north of Melbourne. The area was first inhabited by the Wiradjuri people until European settlers arrived. The town is named after a Minister for Public Works in the state, Charles Alfred Lee, and today has a population of almost 7,000 inhabitants. The town has its own racecourse where racing is administered by the Leeton Jockey Club, and where the highlight of the racing calendar is the Leeton Cup over 1600 metres, traditionally held on the second Saturday in May. The inaugural meeting of the Leeton Race Club, under President Mr J H Trethewey and Secretary Mr T H Hogan, took place on Monday 27th January 1913 and attracted a crowd in excess of 1000, with all race profits donated to the Hospital Fund. |

Although racing lapsed during both World Wars, racing did return with renewed vigour in 1947 when the Leeton Jockey Club launched its inaugural Cup meeting, with a prize fund of £150 and a magnificent £25 trophy. It proved to be very popular, with 120 nominations, 70 entries and 13 declared to run. |
