The Ohio State city of Maple Heights, with population in excess of 23,000, is in Coyahoga County and first came to prominence in 1813. Ohio became a State in 1803, and 10 years later Benjamin Fitch travelled from Cleveland to the area and decided to settle. Records show that racing was first introduced into Ohio in 1827 when a 2 furlong stretch was used at the Cuyahoga Country Fair, and betting almost certainly was tolerated, if not encouraged. Shortly afterwards the sport of Harness racing became popular. However, almost a century later thoroughbred racing was staged at Maple Heights in 1921 on a 6 furlong near-triangular track close to the railway line between Broadway and Rockside. Such was the prestige of the track that in 1924 Maple Heights hosted the inaugural running of the Ohio Derby over 9 furlongs which was won by Black Gold. The Ohio Derby was launched in 1876 when won by Bombay, and continued until 1883 when Pilot was successful, before the race lapsed. The track closed soon after it had hosted the 1924 Ohio Derby.
