MOTUKARARA RACECOURSE
The Motukarara Racecourse can be found in the town of the same name in the Canterbury region of the South Island. The first recorded General Meeting of the Banks Peninsula Racing Club was in 1875, planning a race meeting which took place in March 1876. At that initial meeting the feature race was the Peninsula Cup.
In those early days the course was rudimentary with no fences or trees, and with a course based at Little River and marked out only by flags. Negotiations then took place with the Waihora Domain Board to develop a permanent racecourse at Motukarara.

The inaugural meeting was held on 5th March 1912. The Club continue to organise race meetings, holding a meeting at the course each October.
The principal race is the CS Steven Memorial Banks Peninsula Cup Open Handicap which is contested each October over 2200 metres.

With grateful thanks to Fiona Tonks for providing invaluable information.
