The New South Wales town of Moulamein, in the Murray River region of the state, lays claim to being the oldest town in Riverina. It was inhabited by Aboriginal tribes prior to the first settlers arriving in 1830, although it was a decade later before it began to expand when Augustus Morris arrived. Today the town has a population of about 350 and runs its own racecourse, where racing is administered by the Moulamein Race Club which has been operational for well over a century. The earliest record of a two-day meeting was in 1878 when races were staged on Monday 29th and Tuesday 30th April, key results being shown below. |
