The New South Wales town of Narromine, on the Macquarie River, lies at the centre of the Narromine Shire about 25 miles west of the city of Dubbo. It enjoys good transport links with the rest of the state, the Mitchell Highway passing through the town. The original inhabitants of the region gave the town its name which means ‘honey person, but the earliest European to pass close to the district was the famous explorer John Oxley. Today the town of Narromine has a population of about 3,900 and has its own racecourse which is used by both the Narromine Turf and Jockey Club and the Mungery Picnic Race Club. The inaugural race meeting organised by the Mungery Amateur Picnic Race Club was on Wednesday 19th November 1924 at the Oaks Bridge course when the President of the Club was Mr H Dugan, ably supported by Vice-Presidents Mr R Strahorn and Mr Gordon Williamson. Details of that early meeting are shown below. |
