The New South Wales town of Mungindi, on the Barwon River, lies in the Moree Plains Shire of the state on the border with Queensland. Despite having a population of about 600 the town has its own vibrant racecourse where racing is administered by the Mungindi Jockey Club. The highlight of the racing year is the Mungindi Cup over 1400 metres which is traditionally staged on the second Saturday in July. The Cup has a rich history having first been staged in May 1871 at Barwon River racecourse when the opening race of that meeting, the Maiden Plate, was won by Harlequin owned by Mr Cobb, beating Meteor and Tartar. This was followed by the Barwon River Plate over 1 ½ miles which went to Playboy owned by Mr Single. However, the highlight of the meeting was the inaugural running of the Mungindi Cup over 2 ¼ miles. |

Between the World Wars the state of the racecourse gradually deteriorated until in May 1937 there was an urgent need to carry out improvements. The Race Club endeavoured to raise the necessary money by means of a debenture. They required £1000 to remodel the racecourse, erect a grandstand and build a new pavilion. By 1938 they launched their ‘new racecourse’ when the Mungindi Gold Cup, now over 7 furlongs, was won by Dorrie Verde (5/4 fav) beating Blockie (6/1) and Realsay (4/1). The next year the Gold Cup, over 7 furlongs, went to Marie Clare (6/4 fav) owned by Mr J T Dawson and ridden by N Robinson, beating Recording (3/1) and Tiree (3/1). |
