MYSORE RACECOURSE | ||
It was the ruler of the Mysore region H.H.Sri Chamoraja Wadiyar who furst introduced racing into the area at Kebbe Katte Bungalow in 1891. The first meeting to be held was a 4 day meeting, and racing continued at this venue for a further 29 years.
A new racecourse, the current one, was built on a 152 acre site,by H.H. Sri Nalvadi Krishnaraja Wadiyar, which included modern facilities like a paddock and a grandstand. Such was the popularity of racing that proplonged meetings were staged over 6 days, run by the Mysore Club which were members of the Royal Calcutta Turf Club. The main event at the course in its early history was the Mysore Gold Cup Sweep.
By 1951 the Bangalore Racec Club was formed and races were run at the Mysore venue. It was not until 15th April 1968 that the Mysore Race Club was formed as an independent company.
A pivotal moment in the history of the company came in 1974
when Classic races along the English model were introduced. The Mysore Derbyand 1000 and
2000 Guineas were first competed for. For further information and research on badges and tokens it is worth linking to www.indiannumismatics.com/products.php?id=1&pg=3 or to link to the course use www.mysoreraceclub.com |
