The New South Wales town of Narromine, on the Macquarie River, lies at the centre of the Narromine Shire about 25 miles west of the city of Dubbo. It enjoys good transport links with the rest of the state, the Mitchell Highway passing through the town. The original inhabitants of the region gave the town its name which means ‘honey person, but the earliest European to pass close to the district was the famous explorer John Oxley.  Today the town of Narromine has a population of about 3,900 and has its own racecourse which is used by both the Narromine Turf and Jockey Club and the Mungery Picnic Race Club. The earliest reference to racing in Narromine was in May 1894 when the Narromine Picnic Turf Club registration was accepted by the Austrlian Jockey Club. They held a meeting the next year on Saturday 1st June 1895 when the Opening Handicap was won by Sandy, while the feature Narromine Picnic Handicap went to Presto owned by Mr Canon, beating Arab and Fret Not.
