The large metropolitan area of Newcastle is deemed to be the second most populated area in New South Wales, lying in the Hunter Region some 100 miles north-east of Sydney. The area was originally inhabited by the Awabakal and Worimi Aboriginal tribes, and they named the region Malubimba, but the first European settlers arrived in September 1797 when Lieutenant John Shortland explored the area. Newcastle benefits from its own racecourse, although the town has a rich horse racing history, with formally organised racing certainly taking place by 1848 on Wallaby Flat, near Broadmeadow. Indeed, racing results were provided in newspapers from the 1845 meeting when the course was ‘numerously attended, with the main race was the Subscription Purse for 10 sovereigns.
