The Montana State city of Kalispell, with a population approaching 22,000, is the home of the North-west Montana Fairground of Flathead. The city has a rich history and was established through the hard work of Charles Edward Conrad, a banker in Fort Benton. He, along with 3 other compatriots, designed and developed the town of Kalispell in 1891; it gained city status in 1892. The city has held a celebrated Fair since 1902 on Flathead County Fairgrounds, attracting over 75,000 visitors annually in mid-August. Today the highlight of the Fair is the Rodeo, but for a long period of time, at least 20 years, thoroughbred and quarter horse races were staged as part of the Fair. The 4 furlong standard oval track held races for 5 consecutive days, with the highlight of the meeting being the Kalispell Futurity. In 2005 the number of days of racing was reduced to 3, after which racing lapsed, only to return in 2010 for a couple of days, but the revival did not continue, and the final meeting was staged on 21st August 2011.
