The New South Wales town of Nyngan, on the Bogan River, lies in the central Orana Region of the state. The town enjoys good transport links with rest of the state, being at the junction of the Mitchell and Barrier Highways, located some 365 miles north-west of the state capital Sydney. The region was originally inhabited by the Ngiyambaa Aborigines until the Europeans began arriving in the mid-1800s, with the explorer Thomas Mitchell passing by on the Bogan River in 1835. Today the town has a population of just over 2,000 inhabitants and benefits from its own racecourse where racing is administered by the Nyngan Jockey Club. The earliest evidence of racing in the town was in late November 1883, although few results have survived. Racing then continued on an annual basis, when a pattern of races began to emerge, with the highlight in the early days being the Nyngan Jockey Club Handicap over 1 ½ miles.

The next year a Hurdle Race was introduced with unfortunate consequences when a jockey broke his leg. In May 1887 there was a large attendance of sporting men from the town and Visiting men from other local towns. It would appear that, at this stage, the races were not viewed as a place for the fairer sex. All of the Handicaps were closely fought affairs, a credit to the handicapper.

Nyngan Jockey Club Handicap (1 ½ miles):-Lifeboat (8s 12lbs) beat Tilburn (7st 4lbs) and Vanguard (7st 3lbs)

Nyngan continued to race leading up to, and during, the First World War, although the meetings were often in aid of the War effort or the Hospital. From 1912 to 1920 Nyngen Hospital Races ensured sufficient funds were available to build and maintain a superb hospital, the main event each year at these races was the Nyngan Hospital Handicap. Results of this spectacle, at either end of the War years, are shown below.
1913 Nyngan Hospital Handicap was won by Fresla, beating Miss Benah and Las
1919 Nyngan Hospital Handicap was won by Canlotte (Evens) ridden by Thomson, beating sole opponent Huntook (4/6 fav)

Today there are traditionally at least two meetings annually, But the highlight of the racing year is on 25th April when the Nyngan Cup over 1400 metres is staged.
