The Otaki Racecourse is based at Otaki in the Horowhenua region of North Island some 72 kilometres north east of the capital Wellington. Although the coastal town only has a population of 6000 inhabitants, it boasts a very successful racecourse which has been operational since 1910. The left handed oval turf course has a perimeter of 9 furlongs and hosts meetings throughout the year. A feature race was the Levin Classic contested each November at the track between 1991 and 2012, after which it moved to Trentham Racecourse. The current principal race is the Otaki-Maori Weight for Age Stakes which is run in February. The racecourse took over the running of the Levin Classic when Levin Racecourse closed its gates for the final time in 1990. The Otaki-Maori Racing Club, Levin Racing Club and Wellington Racing Club all hold their meets at the racecourse.
