The Park Jefferson racecourse was located in the state of South Dakota and opened its gates to thoroughbred racing in 1958. At one stage it could boast 45 days racing annually, but this included quarter horse racing. It was ideally placed to bring in the crowds being on the fringes of South Dakota and just across from the state borders of Nebraska and Iowa. The track closed in 1982 and remained closed and unused until four businessmen, including Ted and Jo Carlsen, purchased the site in 1985 and set about transforming it into a dirt motor racing track.
