The South Australia city of Port Lincoln, on the Eyre Peninsula, is located on the shore of Boston Bay and is the largest city on the West Coast. It is situated some 280 kilometres from the state capital Adelaide, although the difficult journey by road is considerably further. The city has its own racecourse with racing administered by the Port Lincoln Racing Club staging racing throughout the Summer months, traditionally hosting 6 meetings from January to March and 9 meetings from September to December.  The highlight of its racing calendar is the Port Lincoln Cup, over 1950 metres, which takes place in early March. The earliest record of racing in Port Lincoln was in 1851 when races were staged on 17th March 1851 at the Little Swamp, about 6 miles from Port Lincoln.

A very important 2 day meeting was staged on Thursday 15th March 1866 when the Stewards were Mr H J Smith, Mr W R Mortlock and Mr Jas Anderson.
