RAMSGATE GREYHOUND STADIUM

This site is not an official website for the track shown here and is neither approved or endorsed by the stadium. I am indebted to Richard English for the scans of badges on this page.

The Kent town of Ramsgate had a greyhound track at Newington, between Newington Road and Bush Avenue, and situated at 1° 25' E 51° 20' N. It operated as an independent track from its inception on 26th May 1928. It closed its gates for the final time in 1930. The site on which the former track once stood is covered with industrial units.

I am grateful to Jon Seddon for the following link to a map showing the whereabouts of the old track

A new track was opened on the Hereson Road in Dumpton Park, Ramsgate Greyhound Stadium, with racing being administered by the Greyhound Racing association (Isle of Thanet) 1929 Ltd.The track had a circumference of 430 yards and operated a trackless hare. The venue proved more popular than the Newington track and racing traditionally took place each Monday, Wednesday and Saturday. The regular distances of the races were 450 metres standard distance, right up to an extended marathon over 1045 metres.

The principal races at the track later on were the Thanet Gold Cup over 450 metres and contested each October, and the Autumn Trophy over 640 metres.

Track Records, as of 1947, are shown below together with an indication of how fast the time is in comparison to other tracks, both for currently open and defunct tracks, in the UK. Ratings are between 0 and 100, where 100 is an extremely fast time and reflects the speed of the track, tightness of the circuit and quality of greyhound visiting the tracks. I am extremely grateful to Tony Nash for providing the data.
