ROCHDALE GREYHOUND STADIUM

The greyhound track in the Lancashire town of Rochdale was situated at 2° 8' W 53° 36' N and held its inaugural meeting on 18th June 1932. Although the Athletics Ground was first used for greyhound racing in 1932, speedway had held its first meeting at the stadium prior to this date.

I am grateful to David Copland for the magnificent trophy shown below.

It was presented to Mr George Whitney, owner of YEN WHIT, the winner of the Rochdale v Hackney Wick Inter track race held on 9th July 1932 over 530 yards. The race was run barely a month after the track opened for its inaugural meeting, and YEN WHIT won in 31.40 secs which was a track record at the time.

Standard races were run over 500 yards and it was customary to run Handicaps as well as Heats of a Winner Takes All sweepstake, with Heat winners contesting the Final towards the end of the meeting. It raced under rules throughout its history, closing in 1962.
