The Ruidoso Downs racecourse is based at Ruidoso Downs in the state of New Mexico and has been the home of quarter horses and thoroughbreds since the 30th May 1947. Although thoroughbred racing was popular here, it was better known as the quarter horse capital of the states. Indeed, it hosts the richest quarter horse race in America, the All American Quarter Horse Futurity which was launched in 1959, as well as the All American Derby. Its early history stems from a devastating flood on the outskirts of the village of Ruidoso Downs which covered large fields with silt and gravel, enabling the locals to hold unofficial races in 1940, while a rodeo grandstand transferred from Capitan was erected on the site in 1945. However, it was not until Eugene Heskey, an Arizona entrepreneur, bought the track in 1953 that it came to prominence, hosting its first meeting on 28th May 1953. Today the 7 furlong oval track has a 200 metre home straight and separate 500 metre chute. |
