Sandown racecourse is situated about 25 kilometres from Melbourne city centre and is run by the Victoria Amateur Turf Club. First and foremost, the Sandown area was known for its motor racing circuit since 1904 and, at that time only pony racing took place at the course.

Metropolitan_trotting_1957.JPG (7742 bytes) The present day course was opened in 1965 and hosted its first meeting on 19th June of that year witnessed by a crowd in excess of 52000. In the early days the main race at the track was the Sandown Cup, but now it also runs the Group 2 Sandown Classic over 2400 metres and the Group 2 Sandown Guineas.
