The 87th winner of the St Leger, held on Wednesday 17th September 1862 over 1 mile 6 furlongs and 132 yards of Town Moor, was The Marquis, a bay colt by Stockwell out of Cinizelli, owned by Mr Stanhope Hawke. A field of 15 runners contested the race, although there were 130 subscriptions of 25 sovereigns each, which was worth 3250 sovereigns. The value to the winner was £4,350. (Equivalent to £474,200 in 2017)
