After one false start in which Cecil Craven ran half a mile before returning to the start, it was Royal Angus who was first to show. Ossian then took over briefly before his stable companion became the pace maker. Over the hill and Cecil Craven was 3 lengths clear of Ossian, with Chislehurst and The Prince close up. At the Red House Ossian took over from his pace maker and kicked on with half a mile to go. At the distance Ossian came away from his field to win by a comfortable 3 lengths in 3 minutes 19 seconds, with Highland Chief a bad third. In 1883 Ossian won the Sussex Stakes and the Great Yorkshire Stakes at York. Over Round 104%
