The flag fell first time allowing Throstle to set the early pace from Legal Tender and matchbox with Ladas held up 3 from the back. By the time they reached the Red House Matchbox took a slight lead from Legal Tender, a lead which was maintained until 2 from home when Ladas began to loom large. Ladas appeared to go clear in the final furlong until Throstle challenged on the whip hand and Ladas had no more to give. The surprise winner Throstle won by 3 parts of a length in 3 minutes 12.2 seconds, with 2 lengths dividing Ladas and Matchbox. As a 2 year old Throstle, who had defective looks, ran second in the Chesterfield Stakes at Newmarket and carried off the Coronation Stakes and Nassau Stakes at three. Over Round 104%
