SUNDERLAND GREYHOUND STADIUM

This site is not an official website for the track shown here and is neither approved or endorsed by the stadium. I am indebted to Richard English for the scans of badges on this page.

The greyhound track at Sunderland is situated at 1° 24' W 54° 56' N and has always been a popular area for promoting greyhound racing. The Newcastle Road Greyhound Stadium first held a meeting on 23rd March 1940. It traditionally raced on Monday and Saturday evenings over distances ranging from 243 metre sprints, right up to 957 metre marathons.

Unusually the track also hosted regular selling races. The principal races at the track are the Sunderland Sprint over 243 metres and the Sunderland Cup over 420 metres. The All England Cup, traditionally run over 480 metres at Brough Park, was held at the track in 1995 when Just Right Jumbo was successful.

Ratings are between 0 and 100, where 100 is an extremely fast time and reflects the speed of the track, tightness of the circuit and quality of greyhound visiting the tracks.
