The New South Wales town of Garah is located in the Moree Plains Shire of the state some 415 miles north west of the state capital Sydney. It enjoys good transport links with the rest of the state, being close to the Carnarvon Highway and on the Mungindi railway route. Despite having a population of barely 300 it has its own racecourse run by the Talmoi Picnic Race Club which lays claim to being one of the oldest Picnic Race Clubs in the state, having first staged racing in November 1911. That inaugural meeting on Clifford racecourse took place on Wednesday 9th November 1911 in front of 200 people, including guests from Moree.
