The New South Wales town of Tomingley is in the Central West region of the state close to the Newell Highway and some 265 miles west of the state capital Sydney. It grew up around the gold mining industry and today has a population of about 350 inhabitants who enjoy the benefit of their own racing club. The earliest race meeting in Tomingley was a two-day meeting on Friday 7th and Saturday 8th March 1902 when the main race was the Tomingley Handicap over a mile attracted a field of 13.

The Tomingley Picnic Race Club first began staging meetings in 1904 when the Judge was Mr J Maker, the Starter Mr L Best, the Clerk of the Scales Mr C Walker and the Handicappers Mr Lees and Mr Reilly.
