The New South Wales town of Trangie lies on the Mitchell Highway in the Orana region of the state. It is located about 300 miles north-west of the state capital Sydney, and 23 miles north-west of Narromine, and currently has a population of about 1200. It has its own picturesque racecourse at the Trangie Showground which hosts racing in March and December. The Trangie Jockey Club administer racing traditionally on the third Saturday in March when the feature race is the Trangie Gold Cup, while its sister Club, the Macquarie Picnic Race Club, holds its meeting on 29th December which features the Macquarie Picnic Race Cup. The earliest mention of racing in Trangie was on Friday 3rd January 1890 when Trangie races were granted registration by the Australian Jockey Club. They scheduled their first meeting after registration for Saturday 25th January, but in the event it took place on Monday 27th January 1890. |

Within 5 years regular 2 day meetings had become firmly embedded into the calendar in late January, with details of the 1895 meeting shown below:- |
By the turn of the century the meeting had moved to late March, but the pattern of races remained broadly the same. |
The years between the two World Wars saw the ups and downs of racing. In 1929 the Trangie Jockey Club Handicap Cup was won by Forstain (3/1) beating Rumleigh and Due West. However, the general decline of racing in the west was evident at the Trangie meeting on Tuesday 21st October 1930. For the Yaraman Trial Stakes there were no entries, while in the Opening Handicap Kerlist walked over. By 1931 the Trangie Trotting Club drew larger crowds. |
