The small town of Tumbarumba is located in the South West Slopes region of New South Wales, on the western edge of the Snowy Mountain. It lies some 300 miles south-west of the state capital Sydney and began to develop in the 1850s after gold was discovered in the area. Within a decade its Post Office opened and it has continued to expand ever since. A further important stage in its development took place in 1921 when it was linked to the rail network. Today the town has about 1900 inhabitants and benefits from its own racecourse where racing is organised by the Tumbarumba Turf Club. However the town has a rich history of holding race meetings, with a three day meeting taking place on Thursday 16th to Saturday 18th March 1865. The feature races on each of the 3 days are shown below. |

At the turn of the century the Tumbarumba Turf Club held its anniversary meeting in late January 1900 featuring the ever popular Tumbarumba Handicap. |
The next year the annual meeting was held on 23rd January 1901 on the Recreation Reserve Racecourse. The Tumbarumba Hotel managed the booths and in the evening a Race Club Ball was held at the Victoria Hall when 40 couples were present. |
In 1998 the track was forced to close when it was thought to be unsafe, but after many committee meetings, and urged on by tremendous local support, improvements were carried out and the track reopened in January 2000. Today the highlight of the racing year is the Tumbarumba Cup over 1400 metres which is traditionally staged on a Saturday in early February. |
