Situated in Albany in the state of California is the Golden Gates Field Racecourse. It first held a race meeting in 1941, with the inaugural meeting taking place on 1st February of that year. The feature races in those early days were the Pacific Handicap, Golden Poppy Handicap and Golden Rush Stakes. The course celebrated its Silver Anniversary in 1966.
Of late its principal races are the Group 2 San Francisco Breeder's Mile, the Group 3 Golden Gate Derby which is also known as the California Derby, and the California Oaks.

 

The Breeder's Cup Mile was first run in 1948 when Prevaricator was successful. Battle Dance gained back to back wins in 1957 and 58. The race was run at Bay Meadows in 2005 and was cancelled in 2008.
The California Derby is run over 8 1/2 furlongs for 3 year olds. Buzzards Bay was successful in 2005 when ridden by Mark Gundry.
