The Green Mountain racetrack was located at Pownal in Bennington County, Vermont. The course first witnessed racing on 24th May 1963 and continued to offer thoroughbred racing until its final meeting in 1976. The racecourse was a 6½ furlong oval dirt track, with separate 5 furlong and 8½ furlong chutes, sharing a 338 metre home straight. On 7th April 1964 the track tried to increase its appeal by offering harness racing on a 5 furlong inner track, while the highlight of its thoroughbred year was the Green Mountain Gold Cup. The track did continue to offer greyhound racing, introducing it into its programme on 24th September 1976, until its final closure in 1992. The announcer at the track was famous for ending the nights meeting with 'Drive carefully as the life you save may be a horseplayer'. It was hoped that racing could return to Green Mountain in 2004 when a Massachusetts film company attempted to buy the track but the bid failed. That hope was completely extinguished in 2014 when the site of the former racecourse became a solar energy farm.
