Situated about 30 minutes, or 12 miles, east of Berlin city centre, the Hoppegarten Racecourse has as its principal race the Group 2 Diana Trial held each May. In 1867 the Union-Klub Jockey Club was formed and they bought 600 hectares of land on the outskirts of Berlin which was previously used for growing hops, hence the name. The inaugural meeting took place on 17th May 1868 and both King Wilhelm I and Otto Von Bismarck were in attendance. The right handed oval turf course has a perimeter of 12 furlongs with a 2 furlong home straight, and regularly holds meetings from Apri until October. Leading up to the Second World War the course was supported by Adolf Hitler who wanted racing to continue at the track, but by 1944 the course was used for the War effort housing a munitions factory which, as a consequence, attracted enemy bombers. After the War the track ended up on the East German rather than the West German side. It was not until the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989 that a successful racing programme was launched once again, the first meeting taking place in March 1990. Today, as well as the Group 2 Diana Trial, the track has played host to the Grosser Preis Von Berlin in August since 2011. |
