The Khartoum Racecourse is situated in Khartoum, the capital city of the vast African country of Sudan, where racing traditionally took place every Friday and Saturday from 30th October until the 30th August. At one stage the races were so popular that Queen Elizabeth II was taken to a meeting on a visit to Sudan. At that stage betting was still allowed, but in 1983 President Nimeiri introduced Sharia Law which prohibited betting. As well as horseracing, periodically camel races were also organised. |

Principal Races | Sudan Derby |
The principle race in their racing year is the Sudan Derby. It is a mere coincidence that after Sudan and South-Sudan had divided into 2 countries the favourite for the 2011 running of the Sudan Derby, held in early August 2011, was the one-eyed Diktator, although President Bashir had entered his own horse Ababil. In the race itself Diktator managed to finish second. In 2017 Nahala won the Sudan Derby, as evidenced by the Youtube clip shown below:- |
