The Plough Inn Horninglow, Burton on Trent |
||
An old coaching inn situated on the main A511 about a mile from the town centre and dating back before the 1600's, the Plough Inn in Burton on Trent is a very traditional pub serving probably the best kept pint of Pedigree in Burton. John Barrington-Earp has been landlord since 1978 and is the longest serving landlord in the town. It is a local pub attracting all age groups and is proud to boast no background music, noise or amusements. However, the TV does provide topics of conversation, particularly if racing is being broadcast, for John is one of the most knowledgeable racing pundits around. | ||

The pub is full of history as a coaching inn just 4 miles from the
historic town of Tutbury with its ancient Castle. It could easily have been visited by
Oliver Cromwell or Charles I. In 1643 Tutbury Castle witnessed an unsuccessful seige by
Parliamentarians during the Civil War, and in May 1645 Charles I brought a strong force to
the Castle. John is very proud to inform guests about the wattle and daub ceiling, or show them the beams which extend through the entire pub. He claims that there are no footings, but the pub does contain two further interesting features:- A listening post through to the former Tap Room, where spies could have listened to secret conversations; A cellar which is accessible from the inside and even has original rope burns still in evidence. |

Nowadays the pub is more likely to see thirsty visitors, eager to experience a pint of well kept Pedigree before continuing on the 10 miles to enjoy racing at Staffordshires only course at Uttoxeter. The bus stop is conveniently placed just staggering distance from the pub. |
