WERRIBEE RACECOURSE | ||
A provincial racecourse just South West of Werribee and just 12 miles from Melbourne in the state of Victoria.
Records show that racing has taken place in the area since
1861, although those early meetings were by the Wyndham Race Club.
|
||
A principal race at the track is the Wyndham Cup which was a very valuable race when run in 1896.
It was in 1912 that administration of the races was taken
over by the Werribee Race Club. It developed the facilities at the course, including
grandstand and paddock amenities. Although the course was used for the War racing did
resume in 1947 and has as its main race the Werribee Cup which is contested each October.
